1. A dream about my Grandad

    / 2 min

I had a lovely dream last night about my Grandad, who we lost about 20 years ago. He was a popular man and whilst not without his flaws, he was a hero of mine. I admired him greatly.

  2. My Photo Highlights of 2017

    / 6 min

It's New Year's Eve, 2017 and, as I sipped my morning coffee, I spent some time looking through my photo album and reflecting on the year. This year has definitely had its ups and downs for me, but the downs aren't represented at all in my camera roll. I only seem to capture the highs, and frankly I don't think that's a problem.

  3. Aggregate 100

    / 3 min

I took part in the Aggregate 100 last weekend. A 100km gravel enduro race comprising four timed stages of varying (but I’m assured atypically long) distances, each over the hilly and at times pretty technical off-road course on the bridleways, singletracks and forest roads of the North York Moors.

  4. A box full of loose bricks and partially dismantled spaceships

    / 2 min

I’m currently somewhere near the middle of a huge project I've undertaken at work. A total refactor of the web app's CSS. Over the 6 or so years we've been working on the product, the CSS codebase has grown bigger and messier as we’ve added features and redesigned certain aspects. When features have been built on a tight deadline, refactoring old CSS to fix specificity clashes has been pretty low on the list of priorities, and so the number and length of selectors has grown.

  5. I don't know my place on the web anymore

    / 2 min

I’ve been thinking recently about my ‘web presence’. I don’t blog anymore. I haven’t in years. I’d like to get back into it but I suffer from the same problem I always have - whilst I enjoy writing, I don’t really feel like I have anything to write about.

  6. Jet2 Flight LS477 - Leeds to Las Palmas

    / 5 min

After half of a fairly fitful night's sleep the opening strains of The Band's Cripple Creek burst from the alarm clock like a slate sliding down the roof. We are awake and ready to go on holiday. A few final items are packed, teeth brushed and we're on the road, riding through the dark to West Yorkshire for a departure from Leeds Bradford International Airport to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

  7. Hello, is it (this recipe for a pumpkin couldron) you're looking for?

    / 2 min

A couple of Halloweens ago I used a recipe I found on the BBC Food website for a rather splendid Chicken and Pumpkin Couldron. I blogged about it on my What I Had For My Tea blog (no longer maintained). A tasty stew cooked and served in the shell of the pumpkin. The BBC has since deemed to break the internet and has taken to recipe down. Fortunately I had a copy printed out in the kitchen drawer so I've retyped it and am posting it here for seasonal posterity.

  8. So you want to get into cycling?

    / 9 min

A friend got in touch to bend my ear about cycling. He's recently committed to a long distance charity bike ride and wanted my advice on where to start with equipment, clothing and training. I'm no expert but I've been in a similar situation that led to cycling being a big part of my life. My email response to him was rather lengthy but I thought it might be of benefit to other newcomers to cycling so I've reworked it a little and published it here.

  9. No Bread, Beer or Biscuits: How I Lost 63lbs in 100 Days

    / 4 min

On the morning of Saturday May 19th, 2012 I awoke with a hangover. The previous night I'd been drinking in York with some friends and now felt truly awful, not just because of the booze and its after effects but because on a number of occasions on that night out that I'd been made aware of just how big a guy I was. Nothing mean or nasty was said. It was something I'd actually been bringing up myself, almost as an icebreaker. 'I'm Pete. I'm the big guy'. I realised I'd been doing this on nights out for a while.
